Local 51 Goes to Washington - (8/31/2009)

Business Manager Thomas Handfield, along with Tim Byrne, Bill DeMello, Bobby Walker and Rick McAuliffe, joined building trades from around the United States for a legislative conference in Washington last month.  The topics included the Employee Free Choice Act, pension reform, the stimulus bill, and the overall outlook of the American economy.

Local 51 leadership met with Senator’s Reed & Whitehouse, along with Congressman Kennedy and Langevin, to discuss development at the Naval Station Newport and the opportunity to get local, union tradesman to build and service construction projects at the Navy facility.  Discussion focused on a proposal by Local 51 to the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Congressional delegations, for legislation requiring that any work performed at military installations in the United States has to be done by mechanical workers that are licensed in the state where the construction work is being performed.  This would guarantee that our members would be doing the local work at military bases in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, as well as assist other building trades around the country.

UA 51 also had breakfast with the Massachusetts building trades and the members of the Massachusetts House delegation.  Congressman McGovern and Lynch spoke about the state of the economy, the opportunities for health care reform and the outlook for passing the Employee Free Choice Act.  A meeting also took place with Congressman Lynch about the power plant proposal in Brockton and the importance of it to the community and to work for our members.
