The next application period will be March 1-12, 2027.

Applications for the Local 51 Apprenticeship Program are accepted the first two weeks of March each year.
We do not accept applications at any other time.

HOW TO APPLY

The application portal link will be posted on our website the first two weeks of March.
 

APPLICATIONS TIMELINE

Phase 1: March: Create a new application and pay the $51 application fee in the Local 51 Application Portal during the first two weeks of March.
Phase 2: April: Local 51 Math Evaluation. Applicants must score 70 or above to proceed.
Phase 3: April: Upload the required documents and submit your application in the Portal by the deadline.
Phase 4: April: Accepted application notices and interview dates will be emailed to applicants who completed Phases 1-3.
Phase 5: May: Interviews with the Local 51 Joint Apprentice Training Committee.
Phase 6: May: Notice of acceptance or rejection will be sent by the end of the month.
Phase 7: May: Accepted applicants will receive a drug test notice by email. The drug test must be completed by deadline.
Phase 8: June: Mandatory OSHA 10 and NFPA Fire Protection training class. All applicants must attend the training regardless of a prior certification.
 
*Applicants who passed the math evaluation in a prior year will receive an email with the date and time of the interview by April 16, 2027.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS FOR THE 2027-2028 SCHOOL YEAR

  • All applicants must provide a valid Driver's License
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age by September 2027
  • Graduate High School or have GED by June 2027
  • Pass required Drug Test
  • Complete mandatory OSHA & NFPA training

Transcripts – High school or GED unofficial transcripts. Academic record detailing a student’s grades, GPA and graduation status from 9th through 12th grade.
High School Letter of Good Standing - Seniors graduating in June 2027 must submit their current transcripts, as well as a letter from their guidance counselor on school letterhead verifying they are on track to graduate.

OPTIONAL APPLICATION DOCUMENTS: Copies or clear pictures. We must be able to read the text.

State Issued Apprentice Licensing in either Plumbing, Pipefitting or Refrigeration - Estimated work and school hours are required
If you are not a US Citizen- Work visa and proof of residency.

First year Apprentice wage rate right now is over $21.00 an hour in pocket, with a total package of over $36.00 an hour with benefits. For every 2,000 hours of work accumulated, the Apprentice is given a raise. Apprentices typically work 2,000 hours each year, earning a raise for each year of their Apprenticeship.

School will start in September, and run from September to May. You will attend class 2 nights a week from 5-9 PM for 5 years.

If you currently hold or have held a State Issued Apprentice License in Plumbing, Pipefitting or Refrigeration a copy of your Apprentice license and estimated Work and School hours will be required.

If you hold a Journeyperson License in Plumbing, Pipefitting or Refrigeration, our Organizer can speak with you about joining Local 51.
